In this project, Tricked Out host Andrew Totolos adds more power to a Honda Civic CRX, replacing the restrictive exhaust manifold with a 4-2-1 header. He also helps the hot Honda keep its cool with an expanded radiator and upgraded high-flow electric fan. Once the performance upgrades are done, this little Honda will sport significant improvement in power with tough new parts in the engine bay to adequately back up as its race-inspired look. The project gets underway with the removal of the Civic's factory radiator.
DIY Difficulty Rating for This Project: We gave this a difficulty rating of 3 on a 5-point intermediate-level scale. There are no special tools involved, but there is quite a bit of wrenching on some stubborn exhaust bolts, and a little light fabrication.
Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in Tricked Out episode 202. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
Tools and Materials:In addition to standard auto-mechanic's tools (wrenches, ratchets, extenders, screwdrivers, nut-drivers, torque wrench, etc.), the essential tools required for all modifications in this project are listed below:
performance header and downpipe
gaskets
header wrap kit
performance radiator
hoses and clamps
radiator fan
mounting hardware
jack and jack-stands
penetrating fluid
silicone spray
coolant
catch basin
wire ties
masking tape
electrical tape
aluminum stock for custom bracket
paper for making template
marker
utility knife
hacksaw and file
drill with step-bit
safety goggles and gloves
*template for custom CRX brackets
Safety Alert: As a standard safety precaution, don't rely solely on a jack to support the weight of a vehicle. When using a jack to access or work beneath a vehicle, always use jack stands for support. Make sure that the jack and stands that you use are rated for the weight and type of your vehicle.
Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection and follow proper safety precautions when working with power tools or pneumatic tools. Also wear eye protection any time you are working underneath a vehicle.
DIY Green Alert: Always dispose of automotive fluids (gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, etc.) and other toxic substances responsibly. Never simply pour toxic fluids down the drain or into water-runoff. Doing so can lead to serious environmental damage and health risks. Most auto center offer recycling of automotive fluids.
