In this project, Andrew Totolos dresses up the engine on a Dodge SRT-4, bringing it up to show-quality status. In this second phase Andrew continues to spruce up the engine by installing a new chrome valve cover. He also adds a hotter coil pack with new plugs and wires so the car will have even more punch on the racetrack.

Materials and tools needed for the second phase of the project:valve cover coil pack spark plugs spark plug wires fuel rail cover gasket scraper rags
Steps:- Begin by removing the old valve cover. Start by unplugging the spark plug wires from the plugs. Then unplug the coil pack.
- Remove the four bolts holding the coil pack in place (figure A) and pull it out--with the spark plug wires still connected for reference (figure B).
Next, remove the hose attached to the PCV valve and the crankcase hose on the other side of the cover. Then, working from the inside out, remove all of the bolts that hold the valve cover in place (figure C).Once all the bolts are removed, carefully pull the cover up and off (figure D) and make sure to remove the old gasket as well.
When you get a new valve cover, make sure to get a gasket set that includes the gasket for the valve cover and one for each spark plug (figure E).To install, flip the valve cover over and push all of the new gaskets into place (figure F).
At the engine, place rags in the valve openings and the spark plug holes to keep them free of contaminants. Then use a gasket scraper to clean off any old gasket debris (figure G).Wipe the mating surface clean, and then remove the rags and carefully set the upgraded valve cover into place.Use the original bolts to lock down the new valve cover. Hand-tighten them first, and then snug them up starting with the bolts closest to the center and working towards the outermost bolts on each side (figure H).After the valve cover is tightened up, replace the PCV valve hose and the crankcase ventilation hose.
The upgraded coil pack is a direct replacement, so bolt it down using the original hardware (figure I). It gets bolted down counter-clockwise. Since it provides a stronger spark, the plugs should be replaced with a new set specifically gapped to meet the specifications of the new coil pack (figure J).Learn more about installing and gapping spark plugs from this Tricked Out WEB-EXTRA. Once all of the spark plugs are installed, push on the upgraded plug wires.Plug in the coil.
Twist on the oil cap (figure K). To install the new fuel rail cover, just push it on (figure L).Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
