Construct the Lid for the Isolation Box

Now that the isolation box has been crafted, it's time to fashion a custom lid for it using the same aluminum material. Here are the basic steps.

    • Use scrap pieces of wood to space the inverted box about one inch out from the corner of the lid material, and then remove the box to mark the first fold lines (figure M).

    • Place it back into position and use the scrap pieces to continue marking a one-inch border around the entire top of the box.

    • Since the edges of the box are flexible, it's better to remove it and use the wood to mark straight fold lines. You'll want to mark cut lines at right angles to the folds. However, for the lid leave one lip side long to fold around for a nice overlay.

    • With gloves and goggles on, cut out the box lid using the same technique that was used earlier on the main box.

    • Fold over the lip edges, and set the lid into place on top of the box (figure N).

    • Use self-tapping screws to secure the lid to the top of the box (figure O). Then back them out to remove the lid and take it to the car for the install.

    • Slide the box into place over the top of the intake pipe (figure P), and then secure it to the fuse-box bracket using the original air-box bolts.

    • Tighten the mounting bolts, and then reinstall the last section of pipe and the air filter (figure Q).

    • Be sure to tighten the hose clamps along the pipe (figure R).

    • After all of the clamps are tightened, hold up a new section of silicone hose to the crank case ventilation fittings for length.

    • Trim off the excess length with a utility knife (figure S) and slide a couple of hose clamps onto the ends, and install the ventilation line onto the car (figure T).

To finish up the install, bring in the box lid and insert the screws to lock it into place (figure U).

Important: Included in this summary are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular car or truck, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of upgrade-kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.
