Q: I recently bought a convertible. Can you give me some tips for caring for the top? A: (DIY Automotive expert, Trisha Hessinger) A convertible does require specialized cleaning and care for the top, whether it's vinyl or cloth. Here are some suggestions.
- Convertibles -- especially modern ones -- utilize a variety of mechanisms for lifting, retracting and locking. Many modern versions raise and lower with the touch of a button. All have some form of latch mechanism (figure A). Typically two or three latches will hold the top secure to the top of the windshield when the top is up.
- When the top of a convertible is lifted (figure B), you can observe the hinges, springs (figure C) and framework that make up the support structure for the top. If the framework becomes bent or (as in older convertibles) worn out over time, repair should be left to professionals. An improperly operating top-frame can eventually cause damage to the cloth or vinyl cover, leading to leaks.
- The large rubber seals around the edges of the top should be cleaned and conditioned to keep them in good shape so that they continue to form a weather-tight seal.
- To clean a convertible top, begin by hosing it off (figure D) before applying any cleaning products. This will help loosen dirt particles.
- Important: Always wash and clean convertible tops in the shade, not in direct sunlight.
- Important: Never spot-clean a convertible top. Always clean the whole top at one time. Spot-cleaning could lead to irregular shading or discolored patches in the fabric or vinyl top.
- If your convertible has a vinyl top, there are a number of products specifically designed for cleaning exterior vinyl (figure E). These are available at auto centers.
- Whether it's cloth or vinyl, it's always a good idea to use a good automotive car-wash solution for simple washing of the convertible top.
- Mix the solution in a bucket, and gently scrub the convertible top using a soft brush (figure F). Avoid stiff-bristle brush that could damage the top or leave abrasion marks.
- Hose the top clean with water to remove the soap and dirt (figure G).
- Once the vinyl or fabric portion is clean, go back and clean the window. Some convertibles have glass windows, and some have plastic. If yours is glass, simply use a glass cleaner.
- If your top has a plastic window, hose it off first then gently blot it with a towel (figure H). Avoid scrubbing or using a circular motion that could leave tiny scratches on the plastic surface and, ultimately, give the plastic a cloudy look. Turn the towel often to clean the window thoroughly. Finally, apply a plastic-cleaner, then buff it off using a soft cloth.
- If your plastic window does get scratches, you may be able to improve the situation using a plastic-window polish.
- Small tears in convertible tops can be repaired using special 2-stage epoxy or patching kits -- available at auto centers.
