As automotive engineering and manufacturing technologies evolve, the performance and durability of new vehicles continually improve. With contemporary maintenance techniques, a used vehicle can be an excellent value if it has been reliably and routinely serviced. But since any vehicle is the sum of hundreds of parts as well as numerous mechanical and electronic systems -- any of which may develop problems-- it's important to find out as much as possible about how well the vehicle has been maintained by the previous owner. Used-car shoppers are often so favorably impressed by the appearance of a vehicle that they overlook potential problems. Before investing in a used vehicle, a thorough inspection is vital to avoiding future frustration and expense. This involves considerably more than kicking the tires. This "Used-Car Buyer's Checklist" provides you with a systematic method for making a comprehensive check of potential trouble areas. Utilizing the list will help ensure that if you do decide to make the purchase, you're not simply inheriting someone else's problems.
- Note: An inspection based on this list is only part of what should be an extensive evaluation of any used vehicle before you make a purchase decision. It is strongly advised that in addition to making your own inspection, you take the vehicle to a trusted mechanic for a professional evaluation before you finalize the purchase.

The air filter should be unclogged, and the area around it should appear maintained, indicating that the filter has been serviced and changed frequently.

Conduct a thorough inspection (or have a mechanic do so) of the underside with the vehicle raised on a lift. Look for signs of oil leaks and other fluid leaks. Take the vehicle on a variety of roads and road-surfaces including bumpy surfaces. Drive it on the interstate, using the on-ramp to check how well it accelerates and shifts. Test the braking and the parking brake.
