  • '66 El Camino: Engine Swap, Pt. 2
  • The engine upgrade on the '66 El Camino continues with a beefed up cooling system, short RAM intake and performance exhaust.
    From "Resto Rides"
    episode DRRD-103

    (Continued from page 3)

Andrew and Christie are almost ready to test fire the engine. First, though, Andrew will wire the harness so they can start the engine by turning the key in the ignition. They finish out the project by installing the new pipes to complete the exhaust system.

    Wiring the Harness

Andrew completes the engine harness wiring. There are three wires to hook up from the computer to the ignition switch to make the car start with the key. There's a 12-volt positive lead, the starter lead that gets attached to the purple wire running to the ECU, and an ignition wire that sends power back to the computer.

After connecting all three wires, Andrew tapes them together using friction tape.

    Exhaust System Upgrade

Now it's on to installing the new pipes for the exhaust system. First, Andrew and Christie raise the first downpipe into position and bolt it to the exhaust manifold at the flanges.

Oxygen sensors will help the car run clean and save gas. Andrew screws one into the downpipe using a special slotted oxygen sensor socket to tighten it up. They plug the sensor into the engine harness and repeat the process on the other side.

Next, Andrew and Christie attach the back end of the downpipes to the existing midpipe using muffler clamps. They finish up by clamping down the tailpipes at the back of the car.

Now that everything is in place, Andrew and Christie test fire the engine.
