  • 1965 Mustang Restoration: Interior Rehab
  • Steve Magnante and restoration expert Chad White reveal their interior motives as they restore the inside of the '65 Mustang fastback.
    From "Classic Car Restoration"
    episode DCR-508

    (Continued from page 4)

Steve Magnante demonstrates how to use specialty automotive interior spray paints to repaint plastic and vinyl interior panels. He paints a Mustang kick panel and then installs some of the painted interior panels into our car. He also shows how to install the rearview mirror and sun visors.

The basic steps in the procedure, as seen in episode 308 of Classic Car Restoration, are summarized below.

    Tools and materials:

    rear interior panels
    kick panels
    interior automotive paints
    mild soap and water
    adhesive promoter
    paperclips
    screw drivers
    sun visors
    rear view mirror

    Install Interior Panels

    • To paint the kick panels, the trick with any spray paint is to spray in light coats and use long sweeping strokes.

    • A second coat usually does the job and because we used the adhesion promoter first, this paint treatment will resist scratches and last for many years.

Steve reinstalls the rear interior panel.

    • While the kick panels dry, install the painted rear panels.

    • The panels fit tightly and are simply secured with screws.

    • The final touch is to reinstall the trim, which we also painted.

Tips on Locating Holes for Rearview Mirror and Sun Visors

    • First, take your thumb and gently press around the top where they are normally located and before long you will find the holes where the screws will go.

    • Take a paperclip and find one of those holes.

    • Now, instead of trying to predict where the other holes are, just make that one hole.

    • Use the bottom of the rear view mirror as your template for where the other holes have to go.

    • Put one screw in, and the other holes will be clear to find.

    • The visor spring studs fit easily into the large hole and the mounting screws can be installed.
