    (Continued from page 1)

Car restoration specialist Chad White, of Class-Tech-Cars, joins Steve to help refurbish and restore the interior of our Mustang, beginning with the headliner. Chad shows how to install insulation in order to reduce road noise. He also demonstrates how to install the bows and material and create a tight headliner.

    Install New Headliner

    • Start the headliner installation by spraying the ceiling as well as the insulation blanket with contact adhesive.

    • When the adhesive tacks up, install the insulation, starting in the front and working to the back.

    • Next, lay the new headliner out. Insert the bows and raise it up.

    • Taking the bows out of the used headliner, insert each bow into the new headliner pockets.

    • It’s important to use the three bows in the same order as they come out of the old headliner.

    • The bows should be installed from front to back, hooking the ends into the factory holes in the roof support.

    • With a little twist, turn the bows over and they spring back, pulling the material against the ceiling.

    • The retainer wires simply clip into the rear frame and then onto the rear bow.

    • With the bows secure, trim a little of the bow pocket so it’s possible to grab the material and pull the sides taut.

    • Next measure the front and back edges to find the center of the headliner material.

    • Apply fast tack trim adhesive to the front center and rear center of the headliner and pull taut. That will establish and start the installation of the headliner.

    • Apply the trim adhesive to both the headliner material and to the center of the windshield, under the weather-strip gasket.

    • After the adhesive air dries for a few seconds, put the material up.

    • Do the same thing in the rear. Apply the adhesive to the center of the material and underneath the rear window weather strip.

    • Before gluing the remaining material, install wind-lace at the sides to hold the headliner in place.

    • Now it’s time to apply more adhesive to set this headliner in place in front. Work from the center over to the pillar.

    • Again apply the adhesive to both the headliner material and underneath the weather-strip lip.

    • When the adhesive tacks up use the headliner tool to push the material in, under the rubber.

    • Continue the process in small steps, gluing the headliner in while pulling the material taut.

    • The wind-lace simply snaps onto the door trim and keeps the sides of the headliner in place.

    • Take your time as you work on the rear window using the plastic tool to tuck the material in as taut as possible and install the wind-lace along the side edges.

    • Trim the excess material using a sharp blade along the inside of the weather-strip lip.
