Metal Refurbishing Tips: Anodized, Chrome and Stainless SteelUsing the right techniques, anodized metal parts can be polished. Use an ultra-fine steel wool to begin a gentle polish. After the polish, buff it up.
Unfortunately even after polishing and buffing our anodized parts, our finish still looks cloudy. This is likely due to a weak coating. It is possible to get it re-anodized if the cloudiness does not work.
Chrome is a thicker plating and is much more durable than anodized finishes. It is more resilient to aggressive polishing and buffing. In addition to hand polishing, there are many types and sizes of buffing tools that will allow more aggressive polishing.
Note: Although chrome can sometimes be buffed out and polished successfully, badly pitted areas will continue to deteriorate.
Stainless steel is the easiest of the metals to be repaired and will look the best when sanded and buffed out. It can be buffed and polished up with aggressive repair. With a little of the metal polishing compound applied to the stainless steel trim, Kevin demonstrates polishing using a large buffing pad.
Decal remover is good for getting rid of residue left behind on stainless steel from tape, decals or other items with adhesive.
Glass Refinishing
Another exterior area that may need sanding is the wind shield, since the glass typically gets scratched or pitted over time. Kevin uses a special felt buff that attaches to a drill.
- Pre-soak the buff to keep it moist.
- Use Rhodite polish mixed with a little bit of distilled water. Add enough water to the polish to get the consistency of gravy.
- After dipping the felt pad into the compound, buff the scratched area of the glass, going across the scratch lines.
- It's important to use a variable speed drill and low power and to apply a good amount of pressure to the surface.
