  • '48 Indian Motorcycle: Primary Chain Inspection
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-306

    (Continued from page 1)

    Steps:

    • The first step is to remove the primary chain cover. But before we can do that, the clutch slave lever has to be removed. Remove the retaining bold and slide the lever off of the shaft. With that removed, the primary cover will come off easily.

    • With the socket wrench, work your way around the cover, loosening all the retaining bolts (figures A and B).

    • Once the bolts are removed, the cover will slide off. Sometimes, it may stick due to the gasket, if it does, you can gently slide a screwdriver between the cover and the case and pry it off.

    • Once the cover is off, set it aside and the chain can be inspected. If any links are damaged or of the chain shows excessive stretching, it will have to be replaced. Ours is in good condition so all we will need to do is clean it.

    • Place a catch pan underneath the bike and a piece of cardboard into the primary chain case, just below the chain. This will prevent any oil or cleaner to damage the paint on the frame (figure C).

    • First, put on some safety glasses, and then using brake cleaner, spray the chain and all the interior of the housing (figure D). All of the dirt and oil should run out and into the catch pan.

    • Once the dirt and oil is removed, allow the chain and housing to dry.

    • While everything is drying, we can use this opportunity to clean and polish the primary cover. With the brake cleaner, clean any oil and dirt off of the cover, and allow it to dry. We were able to clean our cover using the parts washer (figure E).

    • Once the cover is dry, we can polish it using a bench polisher. Pre-load the wheel of the bench polisher with a medium compound. Then go over the entire surface of the cover with the wheel (figure F).

    • Once the medium compound has been polished off, pre-load the other wheel of the polisher with a fine polishing compound.

    • Go over the entire surface of the cover until it shines.

    • Once the cover is polished, we can put everything back together.

    • Set the new gasket in place, and position the primary cover back on the primary case (figures G and H).

    • Insert the bolts and tighten to the recommended torque.
