  • '48 Indian Motorcycle: Primary Chain Inspection
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-306

In this phase of the restoration of our 1948 Indian Chief motorcycle, host Craig Reynolds and antique motorcycle expert Chris Matthews get started on putting the disassembled bike back into one piece. The primary chain is cleaned and it's cover is polished. The rear brakes are rebuilt, and a new drive chain gets installed. Then the newly painted tanks and fenders go back on, trim is added and the fenders are wired for the brake light and distinctive Indian-head emblem, which also illuminates.

While the cover is off, Craig polishes it thoroughly with a bench polisher.
Work gets underway with servicing of the Indian's primary chain. The basic steps, as seen in this episode of Classic Rides, as well as the tools and materials used, are summarized below.

    Primary Chain: Project Overview

The primary chain transfers the drive from the engine to the transmission. Over time, it is possible for the chain to break or stretch. So it's important to remove the cover, inspect the chain and clean out any old oil that may have accumulated over the years. Chris and Craig also take the opportunity to restore an polish the cover while it's removed.

    Tools and materials:

set of sockets, SAE or metric
    socket wrench
    brake cleaner
    bench polisher
    polishing compound
    safety glasses

Note: This is a summary of steps included in the automotive restoration procedures shown in this episode of Classic Rides. These are general guidelines for restoration procedures on this particular make and model of motorcycle, and for the level of restoration selected for this project. There may be variations in procedures depending model, condition of vehicle, level of restoration undertaken and the types of replacement parts or upgrade kits selected. Always follow proper safety precautions, and read and follow manufacturer's guidelines, diagrams and safety notices that come with any replacement parts or kit that you select.

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection and follow proper safety precautions when working with power tools or pneumatic tools. Also wear eye protection any time you are working underneath a vehicle.
