  • 1965 Mustang Restoration: Vintage Reproduction A/C System Install
  • We give our restored Mustang something that most didn't have back in '65 — cold air — in the form of a faux-original a/c unit.

Mustang A/C Upgrade: Install Interior Fan Unit, Connect Wires and Test Fan

Steve completes the air conditioning system by installing the under dash vintage-looking evaporator unit and hooking it up to the car's wiring harness. He tests the fans — and we're cool!

    Steps:

    • Use a wire stripper to strip the wire coming from the a/c compressor and fit the end with a wire connection, crimping it into place.

    • Next, strip the 12-volt power source wire, which provides electricity to the fan as well as the compressor.

    • Install a female spade wire connector onto the end.

      and the new unit.

    • Holding the unit towards the back, connect the pressure hose fitting and the low-pressure hose is installed onto the unit.

    • Install a ground wire onto a screw on the underside of the metal dash.

    • The second wire is the 12 volt power source which feeds power to the fan and activates the entire system.

    • This wire plugs right into the back of the unit.

    • The third wire goes up to the clutch but will not be installed just yet.

    • The a/c fan unit is bolted to the dashboard and tightened down.

    • Now connect the third wire to the a/c compressor.

    • With the battery reconnected, test the fan unit.

Finally after the installation is complete, go to any automotive shop to have them put R-134a into the car.
