    The finished engine
Steve and Allen continue the engine rebuild by installing an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold, a performance 4-barrel carburetor, chrome valve covers and an electronic distributor, which eliminates the maintenance of a "points" system.

Tools and materials for this portion of the project:

    chrome valve covers
    aluminum intake manifold
    heavy duty plug wires
    electronic distributor
    high flow air filter
    RTV sealant
    stainless steel bolts
    torque wrench
    nut driver
    ignition coil

Install Aluminum Intake Manifold, 4-Barrel Carburetor, Chrome Valve Covers and Electronic Distributor

    • Remove the towels from the ports carefully so no debris gets in the intake manifold.

    • Apply RTV Sealant is to the water passages to create water tight seals.

    • The gasket goes on and the sealant is applied to the outside of the gaskets around the water ports as well.

    • The new aluminum intake manifold is carefully lowered into place (figure A).

    • The key to tightening is to lock it up gradually going around the manifold in the specified torque pattern. Then go back and tighten to torque specifications.

    • Install a coolant temperature sensor (figure B) which is mounted closest to the thermostat where it will provide the most accurate temperature reading. Sealants should not be applied to the threads.

    • The engine is now ready for installation of the carburetor.

    • You can install a gasket and a thermal spacer which helps keep the manifold heat away from the carb.

    • The gasket goes on top of the spacer and the new carburetor goes on.

    • As with the manifold, the carburetor bolts are tightened down gradually, moving around the base. Always use you wrist when tightening.

    • To top the engine off, the beautiful chrome valve covers are installed with the bolts being tightened down to snug with a nut driver. Again, it's important to tighten them down gradually going around the perimeter.

    • The new ignition coil is installed along with the bracket.

    • Next install the distributor (figure C), pointing the rotor slightly off our arrow mark so that when the teeth engage the camshaft gear, it shifts to the correct position.

    • Adjust the distributor one gear tooth at a time until it is correctly indexed.
