Steps:- After applying some high-tack gasket dressing to the fuel pump, the gasket goes on.
- Add some fresh grease to the push rod to protect the metals parts from a dry start-up.
- The fuel pump goes in, seating the plunger into the bore. The mounting bolts are installed and tightened down.
- Use stainless steel bolts if you are installing chrome onto the car. They will look great and will resist corrosion with anti-seize compound put on the bolts before installation.
- High tack gasket dressing holds the water pump gasket in place for positioning and the gasket goes on, seating it well on the mounting surface.
- The backing plate goes on and is secure with two fasteners which do not go into water so they do not require anti-seize compound.
- For now just tighten the bolts to snug until all the bolts are in and the pump and alternator bracket are installed.

Do apply anti-seize compound to the alternator bracket bolts which go through the timing case cover and into the block where they do hit water. Again the bolts are tightened, for now, just to snug. Apply anti-seize compound to the bolts that go through the water passages. With all the bolts installed, you can go back through and tighten all the bolts. Now the water pump is secure. With upper bracket securely mounted to the water pump, the alternator can be installed. The top bolt goes into place along with the spacer. The lower bracket is installed onto the water pump, the pump bolt is installed, as well as the alternator side bracket bolt. All the bolts can be tightened down. Get the fan belt tight enough to where you can have about a ¼ inch travel in the belt. You don't want it like a guitar string.
