    (Continued from page 3)

Steve and Keller Wallace modify the stock steering shaft for the new column. Then they reinstall the shaft and steering box and install the new chrome column, which can now be tilted to allow the driver to enter and exit the car more easily.

    Steps:

    • The grinding can be done professionally if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. However if you do wish to grind, there really isn't much to grinding the steering shaft.

    • Just keep the grinding tool steady and flat and use a digital caliper to measure the diameter and check the progress. Be careful not to remove too much metal.

    • The goal is to achieve a very slight interference between the coupler and the modified steering column.

    • The modified steering box goes back in and the bolts secure it to the car.

    • Go back under the car and reconnect the steering gear and install the castle nut secured with a fresh cotter pin.

    • The steering column is protected with tape because it is chrome plated steel so it doesn't get scratched during installation.

    • Be sure, while you are installing, that the hole for the turn lever is at the 90 degree angle so when you install the turn lever it is installed correctly. Also, the self canceller for the directional's needs to be at the 10-30 position as viewed from the driver's seat.

    • Install the new column from inside the car.

    • The coupler set screw is installed and the nut is tightened down.

    • The sleeve support goes back on and the new steering column is secured.
