Installing the Chrome Tilt Steering Column

    Steps:

  • Before removing the old steering column, disconnect the electrical connections.

  • To remove the steering wheel, use a steering wheel puller.

  • Insert the pulling studs into the tapped holes in the hub and thread to lock them in place.

  • The large center stud lines up with the center of the hub.

  • As the center stud is tightened down, the pulling studs force the hub out and the steering wheel can be removed.

  • Going under the dashboard, remove two bolts and the steering column sleeve support.

  • Dismantle the column hub by removing the turn signal lever.

  • Unscrewing the retainer plate will release the horn button spring.

  • The signal switch cancel unit can be pulled out, along with the wiring harness to gain access to the snap ring which holds everything in place.

  • With the snap ring removed, the old steering column can come out.

  • To determine how much of the shaft needed to cut off, measure three feet from the inside end of the shaft and mark the position on the lower shaft.

  • Use a pneumatic cut off wheel to cut the shaft. It may be necessary to us an air tools extension to get down to the shaft. Then pull the cut shaft out.

  • Before removing the steering box, detach the cotter pin and castle nut from the pitman arm.

  • Tap the joint to detach it from the center link.

  • Remove the steering box mounting bolts from the inside of the wheel well and the steering box can be pulled out.
