  • 1965 Mustang Restoration: Dual Brake Master-Cylinder Upgrade
  • The first step in the Mustang's restoration is a critical brake-cylinder upgrdade.

    (Continued from page 1)

  • The push rod goes into the back of the second master cylinder (figure F) and the fasteners for the second cylinder are installed (figure G).

  • Inside the car, connect the push rod bracket to the brake pedal and secure it with a fresh cotter pin.

  • Because of the new dual master cylinder that has two outlets instead of a single parts one, it is necessary to assign one master cylinder to the front wheels of the car, and the other to the rear wheels of the car. In our case, we assign the outboard master cylinder to the front wheels.

  • Next install a residual pressure valve (figure H). This applies two pounds of constant pressure to the front brake calipers to keep the front brakes dry and ready for action. This valve is only needed for the cylinder controlling the front wheels.

  • Use three-way connectors to hook up the brake lines (figures I and J). You don't need any tape or adhesive to install the fittings.

  • The brake lines are bent in shape by the tubing bender so it does not have any kinks and the brake fluid flows well.

  • The shaped brake line is connected to the front brake cylinder fitting and tightened down.

  • The stock line coming in from the rear brakes is attached to the new rear master cylinder and tightened down.

  • The dual master cylinder is installed. There's no need to bleed the brake lines at this point as the existing drum brakes will be replaced in a later phase of the restoration.
