By mid-1966 Ford had sold over one million Mustangs, and the 1966 models remain the best selling of the breed at over a half million that year. Sales continued to be impressive throughout the first generation years of 1964 through 1973. All of the Mustangs from that era are now valued collectibles and great projects for the restoration hobbyist.
Mustangs changed with the times over the ensuing years (figures J, K, L and M), and sales for the line over the years has had its share of ups and downs.
But the Mustang keeps coming back and charging forward, continually earning its places as one of America's most beloved and enduring marques. In 2004 the Mustang commemorated its 40th anniversary with a celebration hosted by the Mustang Club of America and Ford Motor Company.
The beginning of the new millennium has proven to be another successful chapter in Mustang history. Going back to its 1960s roots, the 2007 Shelby GT500 combines modern muscle with classic first-generation styling, Lemans racing stripes and the famous Shelby Cobra logo (figure N).
With its supercharged v8 and 475 horsepower, the GT-500 (figures O and P) is the most powerful stock Mustang ever offered by Ford. There can be little doubt that the Mustang both old and new is as popular as ever, and the breed is sure to keep charging on well into the future.
