  • Wheels and Tires
  • Kevin Tetz installs the Airstream's new wheels and tires.
    From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-209

Host Kevin Tetz installs new correctly-rated Goodyear Marathon tires on the 27', 5,000-pound project '70 Airstream, which are installed on beautiful aluminum wheels. The new wheels complement the Airstream's aluminum exterior.

The new wheels and tires look great!
    Install New Tires

Note: According to Kevin, the new forged aluminum wheels and radial tires will go on easier than the original assembly because the forged aluminum is lighter. This means the tire will rotate better as well. And the softer radial sidewalls translate into a smoother ride!

    1. To remove the old tires, loosen the lug nuts while the trailer is still on the wheels.

    2. Raise the RV with a jack in the specific place under the trailer that is meant for the jack (figure A). Set a jack stand beneath the front axle. Now the lug nuts can come off and the wheel can be removed.

    3. Position the new center cap in the center of the wheel before mounting the wheel onto the RV.

    4. Partially deflate the tire. This will allow the tire to slide in easily.

    5. Tighten the lug nuts by hand to avoid stripping the threads. Snug the nuts up in a star patter, using an impact wrench (figure B).

    6. Once the coach is back on the ground, torque to specification and make sure the tires are at the recommended tire pressure.

    7. Finally, remove the jack stands. Next use a torque wrench to measure the pre-set foot of torque.

In the next segment Kevin is joined by Gary Bunzer, the RV Doctor, who demonstrates the waste system and installs an electric dump valve.
