  • Install Rock Guard
  • Repaired front windows protected by new rock guard
    From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-208

In this final segment Gary Bunzer, the RV Doctor, joins host Kevin Tetz to install a new rock guard, which hides the repaired windows at the front of the trailer. The rock guard for a '70 model is available from Airstream and installs easily. They're important for trailers because they prevent tow-vehicle rocks from breaking the front windows.

The new Airstream rock guards are not only functional; they look great!
    Installing the Exterior Rock Guard

Note: One of the main problem areas on the old '70 Airstream was the front window (figure A), which had been replaced with Plexiglas and sealed with silicone. But fortunately there are no leaks around the windows.

    1. To install the rock guard, first drill the pop rivet out and slide the rail out.

    2. Line up the rail with the Airstream logo (figure B).

    3. Drill the holes for the rivet installation, and seal the exterior installation with sealant.

    4. The rail goes in and is riveted into place.

    5. The rock guard then slides into place.

    6. Next drill more holes for the rivets and put sealant in them. Secure the arms.

    7. Remove the old tie-down brackets with a rivet head and drill the holes for the two tie-down brackets and rivet those onto the edge of the rock guard.

    8. Then mark the placement for the new rubber tie downs and drill the holes for the rivets.

In the next episode (the next to last for this restoration project) Kevin works on the AC/DC and waste systems and installs a cool set of wheels and tires on the Airstream coach.
