  • Window Treatments
  • Striped fabric curtains and aluminum blinds installed
    From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-208

Airstream decorator Arlene Fowler of Fowler Interiors helps host Kevin Tetz update the window treatments in the '70 Airstream coach, including striped fabric curtains that go horizontally to create a wider look. Kevin also installs aluminum micro blinds on the other windows to add a modern touch.

The old window treatments were stained, hard to open and in dire need of an upgrade.

The new striped curtains add dramatic flair to the living room of the Airstream.
    Replacing the Window Treatments

Note: The old window track is being replaced entirely.

    1. The new, updated window track uses a plastic glide that is sewn onto the drapery. Use a cotton twill tape on the top of the glides (on the drapery) and use elastic on the bottom.

Tip: Arlene suggested that the striped fabric go horizontal instead of vertical because when you have a vertical stripe (figure A) the pattern can be lost.

    2. To begin the installation, mount the brackets and snap blinds into place. To keep from seeing the top of the rail, apply double stick tape to the brackets and install the strip of aluminum. The hold-down brackets will keep the blinds secured to the trailer.

    3. With the top curtain rod in place, the bottom has to be 25-3/8" from center to center.

    4. Then measure, mark and drill for the rivets. The bottom curtain rail is riveted into place.

    5. Apply a few of the top glides into place, and then the bottom glides can go into place.

    6. Finally, attach snap fittings to the wall, which will keep the curtain secured to the wall of the trailer.

In the next segment Kevin continues the living room restoration by tackling the furniture, including the installation of a new RV bed, which replaces the cumbersome gaucho bed.
