Replacing the Window Screens- To replace the window screens vents, take the old screen out, carefully remove the re-usable spline and peel the old screen out.
- Clean the screen frame with an abrasive pad.
- Clamp new material to the frame to keep it taught.
- Use a spline roller (or groove wheel--figure A) to push the screen into the groove and the spline also into the groove with the screen underneath.
- Just listen for the spline to go into place, and trim the excess with a utility knife.
- Finally, just trim the outside edge of the screen to fit it into the window.
Replacing the Back LightsNote: Several of the project Airstream lights (figure B) need replacing, but fortunately these '70-style running lights are still available from RV supply stores. - To replace the back lights above the Airstream sign, first pop off the caps of the light with a screwdriver.
- Drill the rivet heads out of the light backing--and the light fixture is removed.
- The drill takes care of the rest of the rivet shaft.
- Cut the wire, leaving as much as possible and strip the end.
- Slip the wire connector onto the wire.
- The wire from the light is slipped into the other side of the connector and crimped down. Always secure wire connections with electrical tape.
- The fixture goes into place (figure C) and the rivet goes into the old rivet hole. It's popped using a rivet gun.
- Pop the amber lens back on (figure D).
Painting the Storage Bins- To paint the storage bins for the bedroom and kitchen, clean thoroughly and then use special paint for plastics.
- As always, it's best to do a light coat first.
- Finally, add a hook and loop tape to the shelves so the bins don't slide during travel.
In the final segment Kevin replaces the Airstream reflector and signal lights.
