  • Kitchen Restoration: Install New Appliances
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-206

Host Kevin Tetz completes the kitchen restoration by installing the new appliances, including a gas cooktop, an RV-style gas-electric refrigerator and a built-in microwave oven. The finished kitchen looks striking and modern, yet retains the vintage touches of the boomerang laminate and metal countertop trim. Previous projects such as the refinished wood cabinets and new aluminum tambour doors complete the modern look.

    Installing the New Appliances

    • To hook up the stove, first turn the power off then start with union to connect our gas line to our flex line at our cook top.

    • Run soap through the threads to create a nice seal.

    • A brass fitting is attached to the main gas line and the new flexible gas line is connected to the fitting and tightened. Now you can slide your stove top base in (figure A).

    • Use a drift to punch out the knock out hole in the new stove base. Thread the gas line through the hole. A plastic collar protects the line coming through the hole.

    • The new gas line is connected to the stove top regulator. Always use two wrenches, not to stress or bend the line when tightening (figure B).

    • To secure the stove top, simply drill holes through the frame into the countertop. Screw the stovetop to the counter. The stove top is secured to the base using two thumb screws. Put the grills on top and the new stovetop is set (figure C).

    • Because the opening is too large for a microwave oven, Kevin built a base and frame to support the new microwave. Build as necessary for your RV. You must have room along the sides and top of the microwave to let it vent.

    • The face trim goes on and is secured by a nail gun. The face plate is screwed to the microwave (figure D).

    • For the refrigerator there are two holes for mounting screws and giant vent hole since it is a gas-electric RV fridge.

    • The refrigerator is secured to the base from the exterior access area. The gas line from the coach is connected to the refrigerator and tightened down. The DC electrical is hooked up and finally the fridge is plugged in to the AC 110 power outlet.
