  • Airstream: Glass Top
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-205

In this second segment of the "Bedroom" episode, host Kevin Tetz creates a unique glass top for the aluminum countertop that features a sand-blasted Classic Rides logo. The process includes using a portable sand-blasting unit, which can use any types of media. With the glass installed, Kevin also demonstrates how to display photo mementoes of one's travels.

The glass top, with the Classic Rides logo, also serves as the perfect place to display mementos.

Creating the Glass Top "Classic Rides" Logo

Note: Kevin is going to place a piece of glass on top of the aluminum so it won't get scratched, and the glass is going to have a special "Classic Rides" design on it.

    1. To make this design we will use an air eraser kit (figure A), using a blasting media (aluminum oxide) to apply the design.

    2. Mark the center axis of the glass and the stencil, and line those up on the backside of the glass.

    3. When laying it down, use a spreader--working it out to both sides to make it even.

    4. To protect the rest of the glass from sandblast, mask off the rest of the glass using paper (figure B).

    5. Now it's time for the etching. Kevin uses a blasting cabinet, where he places the glass. The trigger, which is connected to an air compressor, mixes the blasting media with the air and shoots it toward the glass.

    6. The fine particles of the aluminum oxide immediately work to etch the exposed glass. Refill the glass reservoir as necessary.

Safety Alert: Always wear proper hand, eye and respiratory system protection when blasting!

    7. Remove the masking from the glass and before placing the glass on the aluminum surface apply plastic furniture protectors to keep the glass from sliding.

    8. The glass goes in place.

In the next segment new window blinds are installed.
