  • Walls, Air and Cabinets: Install New Air Conditioning
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-204

Host Kevin Tetz and RV technician Xavier Taylor from Camper's Corner RV Center install a new, more powerful rooftop air conditioner. The unit is the recommended replacement for the 1970 coach and fits well. It also has a "lower profile," which means that it won't distract from the Airstream's classic exterior styling.

The new air conditioner is a low-profile 15,000 BTU unit--the highest rated RV unit available.

    Air Conditioning System Replacement

    1. To gain access to the old air conditioning unit, first remove the curtain rod. Use a ratchet wrench with a small bit to get the screws out. To get the shroud off, remove the knobs and then take the screws out.

    2. Make sure the power is turned off.

    3. Pull the harness loose and disconnect mounting bolts. For long bolts, use a socket wrench (figure A), and the shroud comes down. It's still attached by wires, but cut it long so you leave enough wire to reconnect.

    4. Remove the top of the Airstream on the outside by popping it off with a long rod breaking the seal. Before the new unit can go on, clean the mounting surface.

    5. Once the unit is centered on top, come back inside and install the duct and fit the sealing package.

    6. Mount the duct using the provided screws. Mount the sealing package before hooking up the electrical wires. Continue to tighten the bolts down, which creates a tight seal on the roof.

    7. Connect the multi-pin connector (figure B). Feed the wire into the back side of connection box.

    8. Cut away the shielding and strip the wires, and then connect the wires and install the wire nuts. It's a good idea to wrap the connections with electrical tape. Then tuck the wires into the connection box. Then the connection box can be put back on (figure C).

    9. Mount the shroud by starting with the studs for the controls. Feed them through. Then thread some screws through the chassis.

    10. Place a piece of foam to replace the Airstream ceiling. Then install the rest of the mounting screws in. Put in the filter grades (figure D), which pop into place.

    11. Finally, install the control knobs.

In the final segment of this episode the Airstream's wood cabinets will be restored.
