  • Airstream: Plumbing the Bathroom
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-203

In the first two segments the bathroom of the '70 Airstream was painted and an aluminum wall treatment installed. Now master plumber Jeff Grigg joins host Kevin Tetz to replace the faucets and fixtures.

Instead of choosing RV-stype faucets, which aren't particularly attractive, Kevin chose brushed nickel residential fixtures.

    Plumbing the Bathroom

    1. Drop the new faucet (figure A) into the sink and connect the supply lines. Tighten the nuts to hold the faucet in place, and use a wrench to tighten the supply lines, which are made of flexible stainless steel.

    2. Connect the hot and cold water lines from the shower to the water supply lines in the trailer, and feed the shower control valve (figure B) stem up through the hole for the handle.

    3. Place the escutcheon ring (figure C) on and screw in the handle.

    4. Repeat the process for the hot-water shower control.

    5. Mount two hoses that come from the faucet handles to the shower. The Y-fitting is connected to the hot and cold supply lines from the faucet handles. Tighten these to snug, using a wrench to hold the fitting and another to hold the line.

    6. The top of the Y fitting is connected to the shower hose line and tightened down.

    7. The shower head hose, which has a rubber seal, connects to the bracket and hose line mounted at the tub (figure D). Tighten down with a wrench.

    8. Mount the shower-head bracket in the same (or different if you desire) location as the old shower head, and screw it into the wall.

In the final segment Kevin retints the bathroom widow and installs a new lighting fixture.
