  • Airstream: Install New Water Pump
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-202

In this final segment of the second episode host Kevin Tetz installs a new and upgraded water pump. The new pump will not only provide fresher water, but will hold 50 pounds of pressure at every faucet in the 1970 Airstream. The installation is simple and Kevin uses modern PEX pipes and fittings.

Note: The Airstream's old water pump (figure A) is old in every way so it's vital that it be replaced.

    Installing the New Water Pump

    1. Before installing the new water pump be sure to disconnect the power and remove the water lines.

    2. Next remove the pre-filter (figure B) and pull the line loose from the brass connector--and loosen the brass fitting.

Note: Since the conversion is going from plastic to copper, use Teflon tape on the fittings. Carefully thread them on so you don't cross-thread the fitting.

The new pump (figure C) is a more modern unit, with better energy efficiency. It's also much quieter and has a cleanable pre-filter attached.

    3. Screw in 90s to either side of the filter and use a wrench to hold the pipe while tightening the elbow fitting and the coupler goes on.

    4. A straight fitting goes on to the main line coming from the water tank. Put it on until it bottoms out, and then hold the base while you tighten the top. When it squeaks, the top can be tightened a full turn.

    5. Cut another piece of PEX pipe and attach that to the main water line and tighten the fitting. The other end goes into the filter. To hook up the wiring, strip the main power wires and attach them to the new water pump (red is positive and black is attached to the white wire).

In the next episode of Classic Rides, the 1970 Airsteam bathroom is restored.
