Join host Kevin Tetz for a tour of DIY's 200-series classic ride -- a 27-foot, 1970 Airstream travel trailer "Overlander" International Land Yacht, which is road worn and dated. The restoration plan is to update the decorating style while also incorporating the Airstream look by adding aluminum treatments and vintage accents.
Airstream Introduction- The Airstream "Overlander" model dates back to the '50s, but the Airstreams were first introduced to America in 1936.
- This particular Airstream has single pane vista view windows on the ceiling. In 1969 Airstream changed from original paint finish inside the vehicle to the vinyl wall covering.
- When replacing the pull-out sofa, it's important to remember not to add too much weight to the trailer. Although some parts may be old, they might be valuable so it's a good idea to hold onto some original parts of the Airstream.

Here's a full shot of the Airstream that Kevin and his expert guests will restore during this 10-week Classic Rides series.

The popular "Overlander" Airstream model has been a highway mainstay since the mid-'50s.

Airstream Restoration ProjectHere's a list of what Kevin and his cohorts plan to do with the project Airstream Overlander: 1. Paint the inside of the trailer. 2. Install new window blinds (wooden or aluminum). 3. For the gaucho sofa (figure A), either replace the missing cushions, fix the framework and re-upholster the couch -- or replace the old couch with a new one. 4. Replace the control-unit (figure B) switches (ammeter, battery level check, etc.).
5. Upgrade lighting to modern track lighting.6. Replace carpet with cork, laminate or wood flooring. 7. Maintenance on windows. 8. Round off kitchen countertops and refinish. 9. Cover the kitchen walls with an aluminum backsplash. 10. Replace the covers on gaucho bed. 11. Bedroom and kitchen cabinets refinished. 12. Replace tambour doors (figure C).

The kitchen is in need of a major overhaul.

13. Add aluminum countertops and blinds.14. Re-paint bathroom and replace fixtures. 15. Paint exterior Airstream logo. 16. Install new awning.

A cool feature of the Airstream is Vista View windows, and since this one is single-pane there's no condensation problem.

Last but not least, the Airstream's logo will be repainted to resemble its original shine as seen here!

Note: Be sure to hang on to any parts that could be valuable to other restorers. In the next segment Kevin shares some Airstream history and resources.
