  • Install Front Fork Unit and Engine Installation
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-112

    PHOTO

    Figure A
In the last segment host Kevin Tetz and Greg West, a Vespa restoration expert, installed the new cylinder kit and wheel. In this final segment of the next-to-last "Vespa" episode, the control cables will be routed, the front fork unit installed and the engine installed.

The reassembly of the '74 Vespa Sprint Veloce project scooter can't start until the control cables are routed. A brand new set will be installed -- including the gear-selector cables, clutch cable and the throttle cable.

    Routing the Control Cables

    • Start by running the fish wire down the tube and feed it through the body of the scooter. Repeat the same process, threading the second wire through the body.

    • With the wires located I the seat well of the scooter (figure A), you're ready to run the control cables. Pull the throttle cable through the scooter first.

    • Tape the throttle cable to the fish wire, making sure they are connected tightly (figure B).

Tip: Make sure the tape connection is secure so the cable doesn't get stuck in the body.

    • Slide the throttle cable through the tube into the seat well, which is just like pulling an electrical wire.

    • Before installing the selector and clutch cables, pull the wiring out of the housings to protect them. The wires will go back in later.

    • Tightly tape the three cables to the wiring.

    • Slowly feed the cable through the body (figure C) into the seat well and pull them through.

Note: Make sure to run the control cables before installing the front fork unit.

Installing the Front Fork Unit, Engine and Exhaust

  • Before you install the front fork unit, you need to get the front wheel in place (figure D). Put the lug nuts on by hand, and then tighten them down making sure the rim sits down evenly on the hub.

  • With the wheel assembled, drop the top bearing in place on the front fork (figure E).

  • Tighten the upper race down by hand so it holds the front end in place.

Note: If the upper race is too tight it will bind up your steering and wear out the bearings.

  • Drop the lock ring onto the steering column, and install the top nut and tighten it down, which will hold the headset adjustment in place. This finishes off the front fork assembly.

  • Now it's time to install the engine. Start by feeding the swing arm bolt through the engine. The bolt holds the engine in place.

  • Next, attach the shock (figure F), which holds the back of the engine in place.

  • To get started with the new exhaust, line it up and install the bolt through the barrel stub.

  • Before tightening the bolt down, check to see if the exhaust is up on the manifold.

  • Tighten the exhaust bolts so it's secured down.

In the final episode the scooter is wired, a 12-volt electronic ignition kit is installed, some cool accessories are added and Kevin finally takes the restored Vespa out for a ride!
