  • Motorcycle Gear and Tools and Restoration Recap
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-109

Host Kevin Tetz is ready to take the project '65 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide out on the road.
Host Kevin Tetz is finally ready to take the fully restored project '65 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide on the road!

But first, he bought some essentials that he'll need for the ride:

    • Good pair of boots with a thick sole for safe riding.

    • Gloves with padded palms that allow good freedom of movement and articulation.

    • A leather jacket that has vented panels that will protect him like only leather can.

    • And he's using a Department of Transportation approved helmet, which is mandatory for safe cycle riding.

Warning: Before you get out on the road with a motorcycle (restored or otherwise), make sure you get the proper rider's training, a motorcycle operator's license and know the safety issues involved.

    Other Considerations for Your Bike

    • There are small tool kits (figure A) that fit into the compartments of your bike, and they can really come in handy on the road.

    • You may want to purchase a high-powered blow dryer (figure B that actually acts like a leaf blower and will blow the water off the painted surfaces and chrome of your bike. This will help prevent water spotting.

    • A battery tender (figure C) is a great idea for long-term storage. No matter how long you're storing your bike, it keeps the voltage at the proper level.

    • It's not a bad idea to protect your bike with a high-quality cover as well.

    Hitting the Road

The saying goes that with any project you undertake, it's not where you start (figure D) but where you finish (figure E).

This '65 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide panhead motorcycle was worthy of a high-quality restoration, and Kevin, with impressive assistance from his buddy Dunk, did an amazing job with this beautiful classic of the road.

As long as you choose your bike well, take your time and enlist the help you need as you go along, motorcycle restoration is not that hard.
