  • Install Saddlebags, Speedometer and Other Finishing Touches
  • From "Classic Rides"
    episode DCLR-109

Host Kevin Tetz is down to the wire with the '65 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide restoration. All that's left is to install the saddlebags, speedometer and a few finishing touches before he takes the project bike for a spin.

Kevin found some used saddlebags that were dirty, but otherwise in good shape. The tops were cleaned, the sides color sanded and buffed -- and a bit of touch-up paint was added. The original framework and mounting hardware will be reused.

    Installing the Saddlebag

    • The right saddlebag support bracket attaches to the fender strut, using the mounting bolts.

Note: As always, when installing trim parts, add Threadlocker to the fastener. The blue medium Threadlocker will hold fast -- but can be dismantled.

    • Tighten the bolts using a ratchet wrench with an Allen key bit.

    • Install the chain guard (figure A) because it has to go on before the brackets. (Again, blue Threadlocker is applied to the fastener.)

    • Install the fasteners and tighten them down.

    • Install the left support bracket just like the right one was.

    • The rear bumper guard (figure B) goes on, slipping it into place -- and install the fasteners.

Note: The original guards were also in bad shape. The reproductions work beautifully, however.

Tip: The photographs you took at the start of the restoration project (suggested in the first episode) will come in handy here as you assemble and re-install the trim and accessories.

    • The saddlebag is placed in the support bracket and snapped into place. The inside saddlebag clip also helps keep it secure.

    • The lid goes on and is locked in place (figure C).

    Installing the Speedometer

    • Screw the unit onto the speedometer stem, and attach the electrical connection.

    • Then the unit is placed into the console and secured to the frame using the fasteners and retaining clips (figure D).

    • The console cover goes into place and is secured with the center mounting bolt.

    • Finally, the mileage counter knob is installed on the side of the unit (figure E).

    Final Touches

    • A new chrome battery face plate (figure F) goes on and is snapped into place.

    • Then the top cover goes on along with the retaining bracket, which is screwed and tightened into place.

    • A shiny new chrome cover goes over the kick-start spring and is screwed into place.

    • The kick-start pedal (figure G) slips onto the shaft and is tapped in place with a mallet. The mounting bolt secures the pedal to the shaft.

    • Next is the new foot brake pedal, which slips onto the bracket and shaft and is tapped in place and secured with a bolt.

    • The reconditioned floorboard goes on and is secured with the fasteners.

    • On the other side the newly painted kickstand is installed, and the top nut secures that to the bracket.

    • The Silver powder-coated shift cover (figure H) is installed and secured with mounting screws.

    • The left-side floorboard is installed.

    • The shift pedal goes on and slips onto the shaft -- and is tapped into place and secured with the retaining bolt.

    • The brand new ignition coil cover is installed and tightened down. The spark plug wires are connected from the coil to the two spark plugs.

    • The final touch -- the brand new mirrors, which slip into the handlebar fitting -- are secured with a bolt and nut (figure I).

In the final segment of this project Kevin looks at some riding gear, recaps the project and takes the fully restored '65 Electra Glide for a ride.
