    Installing the New Fuel Pump

With the old fuel pump removed, work can get underway installing the new pump. Here are some tips to help ensure a successful installation:

    • Always use a new seal when installing a new fuel pump.
    • Get lubricant for the new seal to make sure it has a good, leak tight seal.
    • Use new hair pin retainer clips to hold the fuel lines on. Never re-use old clips.

    • After cleaning the tank threads, apply the sealant to the pump assembly flange (figure Q) and smooth it out to cover the outer lip.

    • The new seal goes on (figure R)and is seated on the flange (figure S). A layer of the sealant is applied to the seal.

    • If your tank is contaminated with dirt or grit or if it smells like turpentine, it should be flushed and cleaned.

    • Carefully install the fuel pump assembly into the tank, being careful not to bend the float arm.

    • Adjust the unit as needed until it seats down in the tank.

    • After cleaning the retaining ring, apply a layer of fresh grease to the inside threads (figure T).

    • Carefully install the retaining ring onto the tank, holding the fuel pump in place and being careful not to strip the threads.

    • Use a screwdriver to tighten the ring, and adjust the outer piece so the fuel hose spigots are lined up with the openings.

    • Using new hairpin retainer clips for the quick-connect fuel line fittings, hook up the input and outlet fuel hoses (figures U and V).

    • Apply sealant to the electrical fitting on the pump and on the wires and snap the connection together (figure W). And the fuel pump installation is complete.

To protect the new pump, install a new relay. To install, snap the old relay out and the new relay snaps in.

To clean the battery, spray lubricating oil on the top of it where the acidic corrosion is. A wire brush is good for getting into the crevices of the cable. It's also important to clean the posts.
