Exhaust System With the fuel system installed, the final portion of this phase of the restoration is the installation of a new factory-reproduction performance-exhaust system. For contrast the old exhaust system, removed from the vehicle, was laid next to the new one for visual inspection (figure A). As expected, the old exhaust system exhibited significant rust and corrosion. The new exhaust system offered not only stainless-steel construction, that would be much more resistant to rust and deterioration than the original parts, but also improved flow and performance, as evidenced in the high-flow resonator (figure B).
Following is a summary of the exhaust system upgrade as shown in the episode.
- With the old system already removed from the vehicle, and the car up on the lift, the first step in the installation is to lift the new exhaust system into place ( figure C). Installation takes place from front to back. These parts are bulky, so a second set of hands, in the form of an able assistant, is essential in this process.
- Hanging an exhaust system is a fairly straightforward bolt-on process. It's important to keep in mind, however, that this is and integrated system. Loosely install all components (figure D), then go back and tighten all fasteners once the whole system is in place. This allows for adjustability and a precise fit.
- To install the front pipe onto the exhaust manifold (figure E), tighten the nuts on the studs slowly one-by-one to ensure a proper alignment.
- When hanging clamps, make sure that the clamps are oriented with the fasteners to the side (figure F) -- rather than pointing down -- to minimize the chance of the clamp coming into contact with objects on the road surface.
- Lift the rear section of the exhaust system over the axle to position it (figure G).
- Fasten it to the intermediate pipe using nuts and bolts. Again, install all bolts loosely (figure H) then go back and tighten them all to complete the installation.
