  • The fifth relay in the set-up is the safety relay. It wires up differently than the others to interrupt the ground for the control unit when the ignition is switched on. The number 86 control terminal gets spliced into they yellow switched ignition lead, and the 30 and 85 terminals run to ground. The black wire from the control unit runs to the 87A terminal in the middle of the relay, which means the circuit is completed when there is no power coming from the ignition lead (figure I).

  • With the wiring connected, now it's time to install.

Safety Alert: Before doing any electrical work on your vehicle, unhook the negative terminal on the battery.

  • The Civic's door module is located behind the driver's sidekick panel (figure J). An aftermarket alarm company or the factory service manual can tell you which wire is which.

  • Attach the door lock and unlock leads from the relays to the door lock module in the car.

  • Cut and splice the trigger wires for each door solenoid to their relays (figure K), and then you're ready to hook up the power.

  • The Civic has accessory terminals in the fuse block, so it's easy to connect the constant and switched power leads to the terminals (figure L). If your car doesn't have them, just use fuse taps to attach the leads to the accessory and constant power fuses instead.

  • Finally, connect the ground wire from the safety fuse to a solid ground point near the fuse panel (figure M). Use wire ties to secure the control unit and relay assembly.

  • Use a few more wire ties to neaten up the wiring. Replace the under-dash trim panels to finish up.

Once all the components are hooked up and the battery has been reattached, it's time to give it a try. Once everything checks out, reassemble the dash and start prepping the car for the body shop.
