In this episode, Classic Car Restoration host Mark Lambert finishes up the exterior restoration on the 1962 Corvette roadster. In this first segment, Mark reviews the process the fiberglass body went through at the paint shop with auto-restoration specialist Johnny Cate.
Note: This is a summary of steps included in the automotive restoration procedures shown in this episode of Classic Car Restoration. These are general guidelines for restoration procedures on this particular make and model of vehicle, and for the level of restoration selected for this project. There may be variations in procedures depending on model, condition of vehicle, level of restoration undertaken and the types of replacement parts or upgrade kits selected. Always follow proper safety precautions, and read and follow manufacturer's guidelines, diagrams and safety notices that come with any replacement parts or kit that you select.
- Johnny Cate points out that auto-body restoration and painting has become a high-tech industry, and full restoration can be a long, slow undertaking. The body-prep that occurs prior to repainting is an especially critical and involved process.
- The Corvette's fiberglass body was delivered to the body shop already stripped of paint, and protected with a coat of gray primer (figure A).
- Long-block sanding was performed first, using a long, rigid sanding block that levels large areas of the body. This process also reveals imperfections, damaged and cracked areas in the fiberglass.
- Die-grinders were used to grind out badly damaged areas (figure B), which were then repaired using fiberglass filler.
- Once the sanding and bodywork is complete, a first coat of primer is sprayed on (figure C). Following the first coat of primer, the body is long-block sanded once again.
- The car is both dry-sanded and wet-sanded several more times, and washed down in between each sanding session to remove sanding grit. Detail work on the fiberglass body is all taken care of before painting begins.
- A bright red-color paint was selected for the Corvette. Though not the car's exact original color (Honduras maroon), it is definitely an eye-catching color for a sports roadster.
- The first base-coat of paint is applied in a thin, fine layer (figure D). The painting process takes place in a controlled paint-booth by a painter who wears a protective suit and respirator.
- The body gets three coats of base-paint, with the paint being allowed to dry completely between each coat.
- Following the three base coats, a clear-coat is applied to protect the paint and give the car a shiny appearance (figure E). Two more coats of clear-coat are applied.
- Once the paint and clear-coat has cured, the body is color-sanded several times, washed, and buffed to bring up the final shine.
Giving a classic car a high-quality paint job like this gives the car a striking look, and adds value to the car as a classic collectible. In the segment that follows, the exterior trim is reconditioned and installed on the Corvette.
