Learn how to cover an old fireplace surround with marble and create a new mantel using an old door frame and molding.
Spray the fireplace brick with a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar then use a rag to clean off any residue so the paint and adhesives can stick.
Paint the inside the firebox area with special heat-resistance paint. Apply two coats if necessary.
Using two pieces of ornamental door frame, which include the header and the fluted-column sides, lay the pieces together (if they did not come as one big piece) and measure their current size. If the door frame is larger than the mantel size, then cut the door frame pieces (header) on each side and push them together and measure again to ensure you have the right size. Make sure that you are careful to conceal the center cut with sanding and caulking.
