A tree house-inspired space tucked away in an adjacent wooded area creates the perfect nook to rest and relax, while an elevated walkway makes it accessible from the main house.

Rustic Retreat Space

The outdoor bonus room, dubbed the Sky Cabin by host Chris Grundy, includes a convertible upholstered sleeper sofa that creates a comfy retreat connected to, but apart from, the main house.

Firewood Focal Point

The outdoor bonus room's back wall includes oak firewood cut into 1-inch slices over black OSB (oriented strand board) to create a stunning focal point with loads of texture.

Beautiful Bamboo Floor

The eco-friendly natural strand bamboo floor provides a durable surface that adds warmth to the treehouse-inspired bonus room.

Eco-Concrete Table

A round eco-concrete weatherproof table, suitable for the indoors or outdoors, offers industrial urban-chic style and a place for displaying a plant or resting a drink.

Display Wall

A cedar bookshelf and display wall was installed in front of the back wall at angles to provide visual interest as well as storage for books and accessories.

Natural Beauty

A number of beautiful and hardy succulents and other plants add natural beauty to the outdoor bonus room.

Outdoor Destination

While the outdoor bonus room has no plumbing, the convertible upholstered sleeper sofa and large folding glass door gives guests a private space for enjoying nature and water views.

Patterned Pillows

With covers made from a durable cotton linen material, a selection of throw pillows add a punch of pattern to the bonus room's neutral sofa.

Cozy Spot

The convertible sofa with a cozy striped cotton throw blanket offers a place to catch up on emails or the news.

Window Treatments

Allowing light inside while still offering some privacy, the bonus room's horizontal sheer curtain panels are a durable mix of polyester and cotton.

Beautiful Books

A collection of books on the cedar bookshelf gives guests something to read, but the books also act as decorative accessories that add color and texture to the room.

Remote Control Comfort

This wall-mounted interior unit, part of the outdoor bonus room's high-efficiency mini-split heating and cooling system, offers triple-action filtration and operates by wireless remote control.

Focal Point

This close-up view of the 1-inch slices of firewood adhered to the back wall show how the wood offers varying color and interesting texture.

Staghorn Ferns

The cedar angle display wall includes attractive Staghorn ferns, plants that are grown both indoors and outdoors and thrive in warmer parts of the United States like Florida.

Custom DIY Chandelier

A beautiful and unique custom DIY chandelier was created by using a cypress knee from DIY’s Blog Cabin 2014 and wrapping it in LED fairy lights.

Open Things Up

With a strong panel-and-frame design, the bonus room's large folding glass door system allows the outdoors inside.

Door Hardware

The large folding glass door system's highest-quality rolling hardware helps provide smooth and effortless operation.

Great Addition

The large folding glass door system not only allows views and nature to be enjoyed, but also welcomes cooling breezes inside the bonus room.

Open Things Up

While the outdoor bonus room only measures 10 feet by 10 feet, the large folding glass door system makes the space feel more expansive when opened.

Private and Protected

The design of the outdoor bonus room takes advantage of the special location, with trees that make the structure feel private and protected.

Cohesive Look

The outdoor bonus room features the same soothing slate blue siding as well as a very similar roof line and the same roofing choices as the main house. The window trim has a sophisticated neutral taupe color.

Walk This Way

The sloped walkway that leads from the house to the outdoor bonus room has a tiger wood top cap and a lower portion made of painted pickets, with two rows of cable railing in between.

Ideal Location

This look from the house towards the outdoor bonus room shows how the relaxing hangout sits nestled among trees, including original pines as well as palms planted during an episode of Yard Crashers, but still enjoys close proximity to the main property.

Comfort Control

This unit attached to the outside of the bonus room is part of a high-efficiency mini-split heating and cooling system that helps keep the space comfortable year round.

Rain Protection

Even if it rains, both the decks on the main house and the outdoor bonus room have overhangs that allow views to be enjoyed from a protected space.

Natural Surroundings

While not a true treehouse supported by a tree, the outdoor bonus room is nestled among original trees and newly planted palm trees, so the home's beautiful natural surroundings can be enjoyed.
