Rustic-industrial and contemporary design elements invite family and friends to gather in the kitchen.

Rolling island with GE Appliances

“The island and a banquette are great ways to switch it up and be more casual,” says Alison Victoria host of Kitchen Crashers.

Mint in countertop planter

Fresh herbs, like mint, are conveniently displayed within reach for a refreshing addition to morning tea.

Hanging cookware storage

Among these visually appealing elements is a custom-built pendant for hanging pots and displaying plants.

Cast iron sink in concrete countertop

The gray cast iron sink is outfitted with a hands-free faucet for the ultimate convenience.

Succulent plants

Potted succulents complement the kitchen's rustic, metal surfaces and earthy hues.

Rolling reclaimed wood island

A mobile island is constructed with reclaimed wood, a patina copper surface and vintage-inspired crates.

Metal bar stool

Metal bar stools add rustic industrial flair to this bar area.

To maximize lake views from the kitchen, a wall of prairie-grid windows illuminate the space with natural light.

During the Blog Cabin's People's Choice voting period, online voters selected cherry cabinetry, which invites warmth and a bungalow motif.

Gray slate appliances inspire the tone and theme of surrounding kitchen materials. "Because the slate-line is a gray, no finger print finish, it works well with the kitchen sink," explains project manager Dylan Eastman.

Sleek slate appliances reinforce the room's contemporary bungalow style.

A custom-built rack provides additional storage above the countertops and holds a collection of wine glasses for easy entertaining.

Reclaimed wood island storage

Vintage-inspired fruit crates provide clever storage and a farmhouse feel.

Large enough for big meals, this free-standing range features a double oven and five heating surfaces.

"The backsplash was a way to reuse product we already had," says Dylan. Tile, leftover from Blog Cabin 2013, is brought back to life in a chevron pattern.

Pot Hanger Above Island

A mix of metals and materials inspired the Kitchen Crashers team to design a space with functional features that entertain the eye. "I think when it comes to metal in a kitchen, you've got to bring it in the right way," says Alison.

Built in over the range, a microwave oven saves on power and offers pre-programmed food options.

This stainless steel dishwasher provides easy clean-up for large family meals.

Concrete countertops, made on site, infuse a farmhouse feel into the space and are low maintenance.

Mismatched drawer pulls add eclectic charm to the custom-built island.

Pantry storage with open french doors

The pantry provides plenty of room to store kitchen essentials, while glass doors give the illusion of more space in the kitchen.

A custom-designed rack crafted in a French Roast finish provides additional wine storage space.

"Because you can see in the pantry, you are always reminded of what you have," says Dylan.

Green glass pendant light

An understated green glass pendant shines a spotlight on the banquette and doesn't obstruct the picturesque lake view.

WIndow seat in breakfast nook

A built-in banquette with decorative pillows offers a cozy place to enjoy morning mealtimes.

The sturdy wooden breakfast table adds warmth and character to the room, while bamboo flooring continues throughout the kitchen and main level of the home.

The window seat features extra storage for table linens, serving pieces and more.

Lake-inspired décor hangs on the wall and introduces a pop of subtle blue into the space.

"This year we wanted something a lot bigger with options for people to sit at the banquette, bar, island, or dining room table and it feels like one space," explains Dylan.

The kitchen flows straight into the dining room — a floor plan ideal for entertaining. "The casement opening with the transom is a good way to transition between the ceiling heights, without it being noticeable," says Dylan.
